Why is my dmr-ez45v not formatting?

I have the DMR-EZ45V which looks much the same machine. It’s stuck in a corner and hasn’t been used for years. I do remember that when you insert a blank RW disc it shows a message on the screen about it not being properly formatted and asks if you want DVD management to do it. That worked OK. Maybe you could try a different make of disc?

I have recently bought the Panasonic DMR-EZ48V VHS/DVD Recorder. I tried to start taping something on a Verbatim DVD – RW (V) blank DVD, but for some reason, it couldn’t format the disc despite trying multiple times.

It’s surprising that these VHS DVD combos are still around. Panasonic are great but it never was a useful machine. Most films on VHS tapes are protected so you can’t just convert your collection to DVD.

If there was a mechanical grinding noise then another possibility is the disk is coming into contact with part of the tray or some other part of the mechanism. If that is the case then there should be visible scratches on the surface of the disk. Thanks. It won’t read any DVD-RAM discs now, but will read DVD-R discs.

If the disk does not play back in the recorder that recorded it then there is either an issue with the disk you used or the recorder. It would be unusual for a recorder not to read back a disk it had recorded. Though the noise heard when you played it does not bode well. Have you tried playing other disks in the machine?

Can a failing laser drive damage a DVD?

A failing laser cannot damage a disk, especially commercial disks. However any disks it screws up recording may be unusable. Though a rewritable disk might be OK in another working drive. My parents are using the DVD drive of this model as a PVR.
