It can be caused by a bad driver or crossover part in the speaker system or an “almost short” in a speaker wire. If there are wires really close together they will short when the power of the amp goes up enough to jump the gap between the wires.

What should I do if my Marantz is flashing red?
The correct procedure is to change the caps, and bring the unit up slowly watching power supply voltages and monitoring the line voltages on an o-scope as it comes up. If you are lucky this will just stop at the caps, and the unit will function again after replacement.
