The lifespan of a paper birch in the wild is between 80 and 140 years. Cultivated paper birches have a much shorter life if they are grown in the home landscape. Here they may only live between 30 and 40 years. Some species of birch can live hundreds of years under optimal conditions.
How long does it take a silver birch to mature?
This species is very hardy, has beautiful peeling white bark tinged with pinkish cream and the delicate foliage turns a beautiful bright yellow in the autumn but, it will reach a height of 4 to 5 metres in approximately 10 to 12 years if you start with container grown trees approximately 2 to 3 feet high.

Do birch trees lose their leaves early?
They don’t. They drop them in Autumn, like all other trees which shed their leaves each year. Trees lose a lot of moisture through their leaves via evaporation, and letting them fall early means they’ll be able to retain more water and have a fighting chance to survive in periods when less water is available.

Is it normal for silver birch tree to drop its leaves?
Yes. If they are stressed you may get them dropping leaves, and if not treated the leaves can even go brown and die on the tree (I saw a lot of Silver Birch trees on road verges like that in 2018). It’s a good idea to water them deeply during hot, dry periods.
What kind of fertiliser to use on silver birch?
Normal fertiliser is no good for birches – it has to be the ericaceous stuff, so don’t waste your time using whatever it is you have in the garage or shed if it doesn’t say it is specifically for ericaceous plants. You just dissolve or mix it with water as per the pack instructions, and spread it around the tree.

What causes the leaves on an elm tree to be scorched?
Most elm tree diseases that attack the leaves are caused by fungi, but elm leaf scorch, caused by a bacterium, is a little different.
