Can You dub from a VHS to a DVD?

The critical point is that it never tells you whether you are supposed to actually see the VCR source video while dubbing from VHS to DVD. I got the dubbing underway and could hear the sound alright but never saw a picture. The former blue screen went black while dubbing underway.
