How can I get my TV to play through my surround sound?

I have a Panasonic TV (tx-p50gt50b) and a Panasonic surround sound (sa-btt270) which both work, but I cannot convince the surround sound to play sound from the TV. When I turn the surround sound on, it mutes the TV and I get silence.

I have tried both HDMI and HDMI ARC ports on my TV although the amp doesn’t have a HDMI ARC function (only HDMI) since its quite a few years old. To get the TV sound out I tried both analogue (Red & White cable) and the Digital Optical cable but still no luck. I can see the home theater connects to the TV via Viera link but no sound coming.

Try disabling it. As above you need to manually select the external audio input via the remote. HDMI Input 2 of the TV is ARC enabled connect the HDMI Output of the Home Cinema System to HDMI 2 on the TV and the TV will pass its audio signal back to the System over the HDMI cable. Any HDMI cable will do no need for anything fancy.

You should be able to get audio with the optical audio connection. If the TV audio set up menu has more than one audio choice try the other one. Make sure that you have selected the optical audio input on the HTS. thanks for the response americanaudiophile.
