Can a pioneer vsx-1123 connect to a laptop?
One of the inputs I want to connect my receiver (Pioneer VSX-1123) are HDMI inputs from my laptops. I have several laptops Macs and windows laptops. Both of the laptops are able to output audio using HDMI just fine when connecting to TVs but for some odd reason, they are not able to output audio when connected to my receiver.

Last November I did a major upgrade to my home theater system by purchasing the Pioneer VSX 1021-K receiver and an LG LED TV and Blu-ray player. After spending hours and days setting up and fine tuning the whole system, everything was working perfectly.

It does sound like the Pioneer receiver has an HDMI switching problem. That’s not unusual. Assuming that it’s out of warranty the cost of repairing the HDMI board is prohibitive. You could get an HDMI input selector with audio extraction. Connect your sources to it with HDMI.

Another thing, if I change the resolution to one of the above 4k resolutions, the screen goes blank (as described), then I change the HDMI to one connected directly to the TV, the picture appears (as described), but when I switch the HDMI back to the one connected to the receiver, the picture appears – processed through the receiver.

Where does the HDMI go on a pioneer receiver?
The HDMI out goes to the projector and the digital audio out to the receiver. You won’t get lossless audio like Dolby TrueHD but will work fine with Dolby Digital and DTS. It does sound like the Pioneer receiver has an HDMI switching problem. That’s not unusual.
